It is of crucial importance to hire a professional to design your website; with so many website design companies to choose from it can be overwhelming to choose the best one for your next project.  We have compiled a list of pointers to help you decide on the best company to design or redesign your next website.

DESIGN STYLE

Look at the website designer’s own website and at their portfolio, do you like the overall style of their work? Oftentimes website design companies stick to a certain style and although it can vary from project to project in order to best fulfill client specifications, you can typically identify the style of a designer.  Check out our website for example, Landapixel.com, we take on a modern approach to our design work; we indeed customize and sometimes veer a bit from our regular design style to meet project expectation but we maintain our modern design approach throughout the majority of our projects.

CUSTOMER SERVICE

This is a factor that should largely influence your decision; does your potential design respond to your inquiries in a timely manner, do they answer your questions?  A website design company, and any company for that matter, should promptly respond to emails, phone calls and inquires; if they lack on customer attention since the time you request information or an estimate, you may want to reconsider the company… a business should be most attentive when a lead comes in, they should want to help you and retain your business – if they are dragging from the start, I am afraid it may all be downhill from there.

DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT METHODS

Ask questions and ensure that your website will be designed and developed with the latest methods, software and practices.  For example, it is of high importance for websites to be mobile ready, responsive, so that they automatically adjust to every screen.  Another important feature is a content management system (CMS), will you have access to update your website on your own?  How is your website designed? Will it feature animations? We always highly recommend staying away from using Flash in any website; you can have a website with animations without incorporating any Flash.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

Make sure that your website designer provides you with a contract.  Having a written contract will ensure both parties understand what is included and at what rate.  A contract should contain page quantity and details, turn-around times, website features, website upkeep details (possibly a website maintenance fee), etc.

COMMUNICATION

Website design requires the use and knowledge of many terms that are not part of our everyday lives, with that said, you ideally want to work with a website designer that will explain terms, steps, etc. in ways you will be able to fully understand.

EXPERIENCE

This is a tough one; you almost always assume that a professional with more experience that has been in the business longer is the best option; when it comes to website design, think again.  With technology being ever-changing and increasingly better day after day, choosing a designer that has been around for 10-15 years may not be the best choice (there are exceptions), but the reason for this is that many times, older, more experienced designers are stuck designing and using outdated styles and software, which as you can imagine will not benefit you, your business, or your website.

Unless your experienced designer is continually taking courses and getting updated with the latest development techniques and design trends, we recommend reviewing your options.  The best way to choose your designer shouldn’t only include their years of experience, rely heavily on their current work vs. the number of years they have been at it.  This is not to say a designer that has a month of experience is the best either; as we mention, its a tough one, but again, we recommend looking at their work, asking a lot of questions, comparing estimates – and not just the $$, but the website details and features.

Good luck!  There are many factors that will influence your decision, we hope our tips will help you choose the best designer for your next project.  Have a suggestion, question or comment? Please feel free to contact us!
